The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant, which requires that spending be used in specific areas. Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs. 

COMPLETE ESSER SCHOOL FUNDING PLANS

English Language Arts 

Outcome:

Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Goals:

  • By EOY 2022-2023, at least 60% of students at Glen Forest Elementary School will be reading on or above grade level, a 15% increase from the previous year.
  • By EOY 2022-2023, at least 75% of students will score proficient on the 3rd Grade, 4th Grade and 5th Grade Reading SOL.
  • By EOY 2022-2023, at least 75% of students in Kindergarten at Glen Forest Elementary School will meet benchmark on the PALS Assessment.

Strategy 1:

Provide systematic, explicit Tier 1 instruction to strengthen student understanding of reading standards using the language arts workshop model.

Strategy 2:

Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 evidence-based interventions aligned with the Science of Reading to historically struggling readers.

Strategy 3:

Targeted EIRI intervention will be provided for Kindergarten students who are below the Fall PALS benchmark.

Strategy 4:

ELD (English Language Development) lessons will be implemented with fidelity for English Learners Levels 1-4 to promote growth in at least one of the four domains of reading, writing, speaking, or listening.

Mathematics

Outcome:

Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Goals:

  • By EOY 2022-2023, 72% of K-2 students will meet grade level expectations on the EMAS/iReady.

  • By EOY 2022-2023, at least 70% of students will score proficient on the 3rd Grade Math SOL.

  • By EOY 2022-2023, at least 70% of students will score proficient on the 4th Grade Math SOL.

  • By EOY 2022-2023, at least 70% of students will score proficient on the 5th Grade Math SOL.

Strategy 1:

Provide systematic, explicit Tier 1 instruction to strengthen student understanding of math standards using the math workshop model, while emphasizing engaging students in tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving and facilitate discourse that moves students toward a shared understanding of mathematics.

Strategy 2:

Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 evidence-based interventions to historically struggling mathematicians.

Strategy 3:

Targeted EMAS intervention will be provided for Kindergarten students who are below the Fall benchmark.

Wellness

Outcome:

Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Goals:

  • EOY 2023, GFES will decrease chronic absenteeism from 2021-22 to a rate of no more than 10% through the utilization of Responsive Classroom, considering CASEL's best practices, and SEL strategies across the tiers of MTSS.

Strategy 1:

Responsive Classroom: All staff will participate in Morning Meeting and Closing Circles, which will be planned and practiced with fidelity.

Strategy 2:

Parent Engagement: Staff will collaborate and engage with parents to understand the expectations of school, enrollment, and attendance.

Strategy 3:

SEL programs: Expand understanding and implementation of tier 1, 2, and 3 SEL programs for all staff across the school.

Portrait of a Graduate (POG)

Outcome:

All students will complete a POG Presentation of Learning (POL) by 2025-26.

Goals:

  • 100% of students in grades K, 1, 3, and 4 will demonstrate growth within 1 POG attribute (CT choice) using POG self- reflections scored with the reflection on POG skill growth rubric given at the end of the year.

  • 100% of grade 2 and grade 5 students will complete a POG POL in which they reflect on growth of at least one POG attribute (CT choice); the POG POL will be scored using the FCPS POG POL rubric and data will be documented within Rubi.

Strategy 1:

Grade K, 1, 3, 4, and specialist teachers will participate in PD around the POG attributes.

Strategy 2:

Grades 2 and 5 teachers will participate in PD around the POG POL.

Strategy 3:

All students in grades K - 5 will participate in learning experiences from the AAP math and language arts curriculum once a quarter, which provide students with higher level skills, such as creativity and critical thinking, which is a core character trait of a Portrait of a Graduate.
